Stay local, travel lighter.

You do not need a far trip to get a real family break. From the Bay Area, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough for an easy drive, while still giving you towering redwoods, coast access, and calmer evenings.

Weekend in the redwoods near Boulder Creek

We've hosted hundreds of weekends at The Crow's Nest Retreat — big family reunions, college friend getaways, anniversary trips, you name it. After watching what works (and what doesn't), we've put together the weekend we'd plan if we were booking our own place for the first time. This is Friday arrival to Sunday checkout, morning to evening, with meal ideas, rainy day pivots, and suggestions for different kinds of groups.

The house sleeps 12 across 5 bedrooms in Boulder Creek. You've got a hot tub, a game room with a pool table, foosball, ping pong, and cards, a fire pit, a full kitchen, and fast WiFi. Everything in this itinerary is built around those tools and the distances from our front door.

Let's get into it.

Friday: Arrive, Settle In, and Set the Tone

Friday Afternoon — Get Here and Decompress

Check-in is at 4 PM. Most groups are coming from the Bay Area — San Jose is about 45 minutes away, San Francisco about 1.5 hours. If you're coming from the South Bay, Highway 17 to Highway 9 is a gorgeous drive that feels like a transition into vacation the moment you hit the redwoods. Our driving guide covers every route option.

Before you arrive, stop for groceries. Boulder Creek town is about 5 minutes from the house. The Boulder Creek Market has everything you need for the weekend — produce, meat, snacks, drinks, firewood. Pick up what you'll need for tonight's dinner and tomorrow's breakfast. More on meal planning below.

Once you're at the house, take 20 minutes to explore. Walk the property, check out the redwood canopy from the deck, claim your bedrooms, and let the travel tension drain out. That's the whole point of the first hour.

Friday Evening — First Night Magic

This is the evening that sets the mood for the whole weekend, so keep it simple and social.

Dinner: Grill on the BBQ deck or do a big taco bar in the kitchen — something that doesn't require a chef and lets everyone help. The full kitchen has everything you need: pots, pans, baking sheets, a blender, a coffee maker, the works.

After dinner: Light the fire pit. This is where the weekend really starts. Someone will grab guitars, someone will start telling stories, kids will roast marshmallows. If the group energy is high, open up the game room — the pool table and foosball table tend to create the first friendly rivalries of the trip.

Before bed: The hot tub under the redwoods at night is something else entirely. On clear nights you can see stars through gaps in the canopy. It's the kind of moment people text their friends about.

Rainy day backup: If it's pouring when you arrive, skip the property tour and go straight to the game room. A pool tournament on the first night is an excellent icebreaker. Fire up the kitchen, put on music, and lean into the cozy cabin vibe — rain on a redwood roof sounds incredible.

Saturday: The Big Adventure Day

Saturday is your day to explore. You have redwoods, beaches, trains, and wineries all within 30 minutes — the question is just which direction to point the car.

Saturday Morning — Redwoods First

Start with coffee on the deck. No rush. One of the best things about this location is that nothing is far, so you don't need to leave at dawn.

By 9:30 or 10, head to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park — about 15 minutes from the house. The Redwood Grove Loop Trail is an easy 0.8-mile walk through old-growth giants that are over 1,500 years old. It's flat, stroller-friendly, and genuinely awe-inspiring even if you've seen redwoods before. Our Henry Cowell visitor guide has trail details, parking tips, and seasonal notes.

Want more of a workout? The Eagle Creek Trail and Pipeline Road loop adds about 3 miles of real hiking with river views. Check our best hikes near Boulder Creek guide for more options sorted by difficulty.

Family variant: Roaring Camp Railroads is right next to Henry Cowell (also ~15 minutes from the house). Kids lose their minds over the steam train ride through the redwoods. You can do the grove walk and the train in the same morning. See our Roaring Camp guide for schedules and tickets.

Couples variant: Skip the main grove (it gets busy) and instead hike the Fall Creek unit of Henry Cowell — quieter, more intimate, with a beautiful lime kiln ruin along the trail. It's about 10 minutes from the house.

Saturday Midday — Head to the Coast

After the morning hike, point the car toward the ocean. Santa Cruz is about 30 minutes from the house, and the drive down Highway 9 is one of the prettiest in the Bay Area.

Lunch in Santa Cruz: Park on Pacific Avenue downtown. Grab coffee at Verve, fish tacos at Aldo's, or poke bowls at Pacific Thai. If you've got a big group, split up and reconvene — everyone has different cravings after a morning hike.

The Giant Dipper at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk — about 30 minutes from the retreat

Saturday Afternoon — Beach, Boardwalk, or Capitola

You've got options, and the right call depends on your group.

For families: The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a classic — rides, arcade games, and a wide sandy beach. The Giant Dipper alone is worth the stop. Or head to Natural Bridges State Beach for tide pools and monarch butterflies (October through February). Our best beaches guide covers the family-friendly spots in detail.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk — about 30 minutes from the house

For friend groups: Capitola Village is about 30 minutes from the house and has a completely different energy — colorful Venetian-style buildings on the bluff, a sheltered beach, great bars and restaurants. It's an excellent afternoon hangout.

For couples: Walk West Cliff Drive from Natural Bridges toward the lighthouse. It's a stunning 2-mile coastal path with surfer-watching spots, sea lion overlooks, and zero crowds on weekday-adjacent Saturdays. Finish with wine at Annieglass or Stockwell Cellars downtown.

Saturday Evening — The House Takes Over

Drive back up into the mountains. Saturday night at the house is the centerpiece of the weekend.

Dinner: This is the night to cook something good. The full kitchen can handle a real meal — think a big pasta with homemade sauce, a sheet-pan salmon dinner, or steaks from the grill. If you assign one person to lead and everyone else to chop, pour wine, and DJ, it becomes the event itself. Alternatively, grab takeout from Boulder Creek Pizza on your way back (~5 minutes).

After dinner: This is game room night. A proper pool tournament with a bracket. Foosball doubles. Ping pong round-robin. Cards at the table. The game room is the social engine of the house, and Saturday night is when it runs hardest. If you need a break from competition, the hot tub is always waiting.

Rainy day backup for Saturday: If the weather kills your coast plans, pivot to an indoor adventure. Spend the morning at Henry Cowell (redwood hikes are arguably better in light rain — the forest smells incredible and the trails stay sheltered). Skip the beach and instead visit the Santa Cruz Mountains wineries — Bargetto Winery and Beauregard Vineyards are both 15–30 minutes from the house, and tasting rooms don't care about weather. Come home for an early dinner and a long game room session. Some of our best guest reviews mention rainy Saturdays as the highlight because everyone was together all day.

Sunday: Slow Morning, One Last Adventure, and Goodbye

Sunday is about savoring what's left. Don't overpack it.

Sunday Morning — Lazy Breakfast at the House

This is the morning to use the kitchen like you mean it. Pancakes, eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, the good coffee you bought at the market. Set up a DIY breakfast bar and let people roll through at their own pace. The deck in the morning light is the best seat in the house.

If the weather is nice, take coffee outside and just sit with the trees for a while. These quiet mornings between activities are the memories people actually keep.

Sunday Late Morning — One More Thing

You've got time for one focused activity before heading out. Pick based on what you skipped yesterday.

Option A: Big Basin Redwoods (~20 min from the house). If you loved Henry Cowell, Big Basin is the next level — taller trees, bigger waterfalls, and more solitude. The Redwood Loop is a moderate 5-mile hike with stops at Sempervirens Falls and Slippery Rock. See our Big Basin guide for trail conditions and what to expect post-fire recovery.

Option B: Santa Cruz Mountains wineries (~15–30 min). A late-morning tasting is a perfect Sunday pace. Beauregard Vineyards has a gorgeous hilltop setting. Bargetto Winery in Soquel has been making wine since 1933. You can hit one or two tastings before lunch easily.

Option C: Downtown Boulder Creek (~5 min). Browse the shops, grab pastries at Josephine's Café (the pancakes are legendary), walk along the San Lorenzo River. It's the zero-logistics option and sometimes that's exactly right for a Sunday.

Family variant: Roaring Camp if you didn't go Saturday — the Sunday morning train runs are usually less crowded. Or take the kids to the river beach in Boulder Creek for splashing and rock-skipping.

Couples variant: A quiet morning hike on the Loch Lomond trails (about 20 minutes out), followed by wine tasting. It's a perfect send-off day.

Sunday Afternoon — Pack Up and Head Out

Checkout is at 11 AM. If you did your morning activity early, you'll be packed and rolling by then. If you want to linger, grab brunch in Boulder Creek before you hit the road.

The drive back to San Jose takes about 45 minutes, SF about 1.5 hours. Highway 9 to Highway 17 is the standard route and it's smooth on Sunday afternoons.

Meal Planning Tips for the Full Kitchen

The kitchen at The Crow's Nest Retreat isn't a token vacation kitchen — it's a real, full-size setup with everything you need to cook properly. Here's how to use it:

Before you arrive: Plan 4 meals — Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, Saturday dinner, and Sunday breakfast. Lunch both days happens out in the world. Buy groceries at Boulder Creek Market on the way in.

Friday dinner: Keep it easy. Tacos, burgers on the grill, or a big charcuterie spread. You just drove here — nobody wants to sous vide anything.

Saturday breakfast: Bagels, fruit, yogurt, and good coffee. Quick and functional so you can get out the door for your adventure.

Saturday dinner: This is the big one. Cook together. Pasta feeds a crowd cheaply. Grilled steaks feel like a celebration. Sheet-pan meals are foolproof. Assign a lead cook and let everyone else be sous chefs.

Sunday breakfast: Pancakes and eggs. Go all out. You're not in a hurry.

Pro tip: Bring a cooler with your perishables if you're coming from far away. The kitchen has a full fridge, but if 12 people bring groceries independently, you'll run out of shelf space fast. Coordinate.

Adapting This Weekend for Your Group

Family Weekend (Kids Under 12)

Lean into Roaring Camp, the Boardwalk, tide pools at Natural Bridges, and the river beach in Boulder Creek. Keep drives short. Budget extra time at the house — the game room, the yard, and the fire pit are genuine kid entertainment, not filler. Bring s'mores supplies.

Friend Group Weekend (20s–40s)

Hit the wineries, Capitola, and the Boardwalk. Cook a big dinner Saturday. Run a pool tournament. Stay up late around the fire pit. Leave Sunday morning flexible so nobody has to set an alarm. Bring a bluetooth speaker.

Couples Retreat

Hike the quieter trails (Fall Creek, Loch Lomond, Big Basin). Walk West Cliff Drive. Do a wine tasting. Cook a nice dinner together Saturday night and eat on the deck. Use the hot tub after dark. Skip the crowded tourist stops and lean into the pace of the mountains.
