Best Short Getaways from San Francisco — Without the City

Where to go for 2–4 days when you want out of San Francisco but not a long drive: redwoods and coast in about 1.5 hours, one house to stay in, and a plan that actually feels like an escape.

Stay local, travel lighter.

You do not need a far trip to get a real family break. From the Bay Area, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough for an easy drive, while still giving you towering redwoods, coast access, and calmer evenings.

When you want a short getaway from San Francisco — a few days of trees and coast, not more city — the obvious move is south. Not to another urban center, but to the Santa Cruz Mountains: redwoods, ocean access, and a single base so you’re not living out of the car. From SF it’s about 1.5 hours to Boulder Creek. From there, redwoods and beaches are 15–35 minutes away. That’s the sweet spot for a 2–4 day trip without the long haul.

Here’s how to plan a short getaway from San Francisco that’s all nature and no city.

Why “Out of SF” Means South to the Redwoods

San Francisco is surrounded by options, but many of them are either still urban (East Bay, Peninsula towns) or a long drive (Tahoe, Mendocino, Big Sur). For a short getaway where you actually feel like you left, the Santa Cruz Mountains hit the middle: about 1.5 hours from the city, and you’re in forest. Add another 15–30 minutes and you’re at the coast.

The drive: 101 or 280 to 17 South, over the hill to Scotts Valley, then Highway 9 North to Boulder Creek. Or 1 South to Half Moon Bay and down the coast — longer but scenic. Our how to get to Boulder Creek from the Bay Area covers routes from SF and the Peninsula.

What you get: One house in the trees. Morning in the redwoods (Henry Cowell, Big Basin, Roaring Camp). Afternoon at the beach or in Santa Cruz if you want. Evening at the house — fire pit, hot tub, no city noise. That’s the template.

Check available dates and book your base; then plan the days around it.

One House, 2–4 Days, No City

The pattern that works for SF-based getaways:

  1. Drive to one house (e.g. Boulder Creek — ~1.5 hrs from SF).
  2. Unpack once. Same kitchen, same living room, same deck and hot tub every night.
  3. Each day: redwoods, coast, or stay at the house. No hotel hop, no urban stops unless you choose them.
  4. Evenings at the house — dinner, fire pit, stars. The house is the retreat, not just a bed.

The Crow’s Nest Retreat in Boulder Creek sleeps 12 in 5 bedrooms, with a hot tub, game room, fire pit, and full kitchen. It’s built for exactly this: a short escape from the city, in the trees, with redwoods and coast when you want them. See why groups choose a redwoods retreat and in-house entertainment. A Simple 3-Day Plan (Friday–Sunday or Any 3 Days)

Day 1 — Get there. Leave SF in the afternoon. Aim for check-in (4 PM) or shortly after. Stop for groceries in Felton or Boulder Creek if you didn’t bring basics. Easy dinner at the house. Fire pit or hot tub. First night = “we’re out of the city.”

Day 2 — Redwoods and coast. Morning at Henry Cowell Redwoods or Big Basin (~15–20 min from the house). Lunch at the house or in Santa Cruz. Afternoon: Santa Cruz Boardwalk, Natural Bridges, or West Cliff. Back to the house for dinner and evening. Perfect weekend itinerary has more detail.

Day 3 — One more thing, then home. Lazy breakfast. One activity: short hike, Roaring Camp train, Boulder Creek town, or winery. Check out by 11 and drive back to SF. You’re home without losing the whole day.

Who This Is For

SF families: Same one-house, short-drive idea. Game room and fire pit keep kids happy at “home”; redwoods and Boardwalk are the outings. Kid-friendly plan and kids off school ideas translate well from the South Bay.

Friend groups: One base, one big dinner, pool tournament, hot tub. Add wineries or Capitola if you like. No city, no hassle.

Couples: Quiet trails, coast walks, wine tasting. The house is a quiet base for two. Fall weekends and summer guide have seasonal angles.
